Currently, the Blue Jays have six established starters: Kevin Gausman, Cease, Ponce, Shane Bieber, Trey Yesavage, and Jose Berrios. Adding another pitcher to this mix may seem unnecessary at first glance.
However, renowned MLB insider Jon Heyman recently shared that the Blue Jays maintain an interest in Scherzer’s services. "I think the Jays still have some interest in Scherzer," Heyman mentioned during a segment on MLB Network. "It will be fascinating to see what decision Max ultimately makes. At 41 years old, he aspires to pitch throughout the entire season and remains one of the fiercest competitors in the game."
Scherzer has previously won the hearts of fans and teammates alike during his time with the Blue Jays, making the idea of his return quite compelling, even if it raises questions about how he would fit into the existing roster.
Adding this future Hall of Famer could enhance the depth of Toronto's pitching lineup. It would not only allow the team to manage the workloads of younger pitchers like Yesavage and Bieber more effectively but also enable Scherzer to serve as a mentor and leader for the squad.
Last season, Scherzer had a record of 5 wins and 5 losses, accompanied by a 5.19 ERA across 17 starts with the Blue Jays. In postseason play, he improved his performance, achieving a 1-0 record with a 3.77 ERA over three starts.
As Scherzer approaches the twilight of his illustrious career, he is taking a thoughtful approach to his next signing. He has expressed a desire to join a competitive team, signaling that he is even willing to delay his decision until after Opening Day if necessary. During a conversation with Ken Rosenthal from The Athletic, Scherzer confirmed that while he is ready to sign with the right team, he is also comfortable waiting for the perfect opportunity to present itself.
"In a recent phone call, I shared with Max that he is healthy and prepared to make a move whenever the right clubs reach out," Rosenthal conveyed in his report. "However, if the ideal scenario doesn’t arise, he is perfectly fine waiting until after Opening Day for a chance with one of his preferred teams."
At this juncture, Scherzer has not disclosed which teams he is interested in joining. Still, his strategy could mirror that of Roger Clemens, who famously signed with the New York Yankees late in the 2007 season, making it clear that Scherzer is in no rush and can afford to be selective. While enjoying time at home with his wife, Erica, and their four children, he waits for the right offer to come along.
A remarkable player, Scherzer has earned the distinction of being an eight-time All-Star, celebrated for his skills as one of the finest pitchers of his generation. "While acknowledging that injuries and poor performances can occur over a long season, the overall outlook for the Blue Jays is decidedly optimistic. If Gausman continues to pitch at a high level and if Bieber can contribute a full, healthy season, this rotation could very well propel the team into postseason contention."
