Interestingly, prior to this decision, Brian Flores, who was serving as the Vikings' defensive coordinator, also interviewed for the same position in Washington, but ultimately chose to stay with Minnesota after reaching a new agreement.
Daronte Jones joined the Vikings in 2022, initially taking on the role of defensive backs coach before being promoted to include the responsibilities of passing game coordinator the following year. His coaching journey has seen him work alongside notable figures such as Vance Joseph, Mike Zimmer, and Brian Flores, which has undoubtedly shaped his approach to defensive schemes.
Furthermore, Jones has an impressive background that includes stints with the Miami Dolphins from 2016 to 2017 and the Cincinnati Bengals between 2018 and 2019. Notably, he served as the defensive coordinator for LSU in 2021, showcasing his capability at various levels of football.
This hiring comes on the heels of the Commanders parting ways with former defensive coordinator Joe Whitt on January 6. It's worth mentioning that head coach Dan Quinn had already taken over the play-calling responsibilities following Week 10 of the previous season. Under their previous leadership, the Commanders struggled defensively, finishing at the bottom of the league in terms of yards allowed and ranking 27th in points surrendered.
