Julia Buckley, the MP for Shrewsbury, believes that the recent takeover of the Wrexham football club by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney has sparked a new interest in the area. WSMR's Bid and the Office of Rail and Road's Response

The Wrexham, Shropshire and Midlands Railway (WSMR), led by Alstom, submitted a bid to provide daily trains between Wrexham and London. Their initial proposal for five daily services was rejected by the Office of Rail and Road due to concerns over congestion on the line. In response, WSMR adapted their plan, reducing the number of daily services to three, with the potential for a fourth in the future, and added an additional stop at Wellington, Shropshire.

WSMR's mobilisation director, Darren Horley, emphasized the importance of connecting towns and cities that currently lack direct rail links. He believes the new service will be faster, with a journey time of approximately four hours from Wrexham to London, addressing previous criticisms about travel time.

The Business Case and Regional Development

Carl Jones, a director of Shropshire Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the unique situation of Shropshire being the only county in England without a direct rail link to London. He argued that this could hinder business growth and make it challenging to attract new companies to the region. Nick Millington, Network Rail's Route director for Wales and Borders, supported this view, stating that the area is growing with support from the Welsh Assembly, and expressing interest in proposals to improve Shropshire's station capacity.

Infrastructure Improvements and Town Development

Julia Buckley believes there is now more support for improving the infrastructure, including enhancements to Shrewsbury station. She envisions a redesigned station as part of a 10-year plan for the town, featuring a two-storey car park at the rear, a new front area, and improved bus links. Buckley imagines the front of the station transformed into a vibrant plaza with fountains, a place where people can relax and enjoy a panini and a cappuccino.

There is also a proposal for a new parkway station to the east of Shrewsbury. Ian Baxter from SLC, who is working on this plan, explained that while a site has not yet been identified, the station will have easy access to roads in and out of the county town. SLC has experience with similar projects, such as Warwick Parkway and Worcester Parkway, and Baxter estimates that the new station could take between four and six years to become a reality.
