UKHSA Issues Urgent Warning: Stop Using These Wipes After Fatal Outbreak
A recent outbreak of Burkholderia stabilis, a potentially dangerous bacterium, has led to a critical health alert from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). This outbreak has resulted in one fatality and severe infections requiring hospital admission. The UKHSA and Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) have identified four non-sterile alcohol-free wipe products that should be avoided immediately.
Between January 2018 and February 2026, 59 confirmed cases of Burkholderia stabilis were linked to these products, with a limited number of cases still being detected. The bacteria are naturally found in the environment, but they pose a significant risk to immunocompromised individuals, those with cystic fibrosis, and patients managing intravenous lines at home.
The affected products, which should not be used under any circumstances, are:
- ValueAid Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes
- Microsafe Moist Wipe Alcohol Free
- Steroplast Sterowipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes
- Reliwipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes (contamination with a different Burkholderia strain was found)
The UKHSA and MHRA emphasize that non-sterile alcohol-free wipes, regardless of type or brand, must not be used for first aid, applied to broken skin, or cleaned intravenous lines. In July, the MHRA issued warnings to distributors, leading to the removal of these products from the market. However, some may still be found in first aid kits and households.
The public is advised to check their homes and first aid kits for these wipes. Anyone in possession of the affected products should stop using them immediately and dispose of them in regular household waste. The UKHSA issued a safety alert to healthcare professionals in June 2025 and reiterated the advice on February 5, 2026.
Symptoms of a Burkholderia stabilis infection can vary, including redness, swelling, increased pain, warmth around a wound, pus drainage, fever, and chills. In severe cases, symptoms may indicate sepsis, which can lead to confusion, rash, and difficulty breathing. The UKHSA advises contacting NHS 111 immediately if you have concerns about a wound that isn't healing or develop a fever following an injury.
